Create your legacy
A downloadable game for Windows
In the game "Create Your Legacy," you get to be a part of "The Riders' Fight," (Rytterkampen ved Aarhus) a 15-minute battle that happened North of Aarhus in May of 1849. You play as a war artist, overlooking the battlefield, dodging bullets/swords, and hiding from enemies, while painting the art piece you hope, will become your future legacy and a testement to your heroic act.
A Game for Culture
The gameplay experience will give you a unique insight into what might have been going through the minds of war artists, when they created the dramatic pieces that now hang quietly in the museum corridors of grand institutions. We want to shift the focus from the product of the artist to the artist themselves, to zoom in on the humanity hidden in the painting, and remind the player that the war artist was a living person.
We aim to express how we as people co-write history, and ask the question, of who has the freedom to create and define history and cultural heritage, and whether we can trust the stories we are being told to be true.
In Create Your Legacy, the gameplayer is empowered to tell their version of the story. We shake up the common roles of the war-game, to let the player become an onlooker, rather than a fighter, allowing for the story of an often overlooked historical actor to emerge from the shadows. We hope to impact the player to become aware of and empathize with the people behind war-pieces both past and future - Connecting this game, to the events happening and questions asked in contemporary culture.
What makes Create Your legacy stand out, is the interactive nature of the game that indirectly makes the artwork "Rytterkampen ved Aarhus" af Jørgen Sonne interactive as well as enables the gameplayer to actively interact with the cultural heritage and the story behind the original painting.

EPIC-WE Cultural Game gave us to chance to work together and explore gamemaking in a unfamiliar setting. As a team we had brand new gamemakers working alongside experienced ones, which made for an interesting and sometimes complicated experience, as it let us to play around with gamemaking and culture creation, while avoiding the pitfalls that comes with having a clear sense of what a good game can be.
What is the most significant or valuable thing you took away from the
EPIC-WE Cultural Game Jam?
The power of friendship, good food and a deep hatred for paperwork....
