Game Log 1 Experience
1. Ideation Wheel and Capture Cards
At first we could narrow it down to either the "Exploration" room or the "Philosophy" room. We ended up choosing the third exhibition room "Exploration", because we thought it had the richest pictures in terms of storytelling, where the "Philosophy" room had more elements of cool paintings to be used in the visual parts of the game.
The ideation wheel setting we decided on after a lot of brainstorming was: Exploration - Digital - Freedom. We chose the work with digital room, because in that way it can be played by anyone with access to a computer. We decided on digital because it was also the one best fitting to our room, which we brainstormed in the second part, which will come in the next log. We chose freedom as the european value in our project, because we found it to fit the best with game design and our room title "Exploration" - the freedom to explore.
2. Experience Methods (For each chosen Experience Method)
Method "Empowered Participation"
We decided on this method, almost before reading it, because we had some previous experience of group work, so we intuitively divided the tasks between us and then took a round of us describing why we wanted the task we have chosen, what we would see ourselves working with and then what we wanted support with during our collaboration together.
Method "Culturestorming"
We decided on this as the second method, because we needed a wide brainstorm to get inspired to create a game design. We worked with all three questions, with a primary focus on the second one being: "How do we use culture as material for a game?". Then we set a timer for 3 minutes and wrote down as many ideas we could. We then went through all the ideas. After that, because there was only 35 minutes left, we found one of the assigned museum guides to talk about the paintings we liked the most in the room. We chose around 7 paintings.
3. First idea: Games through culture
Refer to 1. Ideation Wheel and capture cards
4. First ideas: Games for culture
Our cultural game is inspired by this photo you see underneath. We got inspired by this painting because it opened our eyes towards actually thinking about the war painter. We thought about the war in Gaza and how they can document about the war live from social media. This could not have been done back in the day, you could only document through text and paintings. So through our game the cultural world of a war painter gets introduced - a side you do not normally see, because wargames is usually played in battle and not as the documenter of the battle. It introduces a different outlook on art and art history.
The value "freedom" can be seen our thoughts behind the game of being a war painter. Who has the freedom to document history? How is history documented?
Our game will make it possible for the players to become a war painter, for a few minutes. The adrenaline will be vivid in the gameplay and the pressure of creating your own cultural legacy through the game. It will empower artists, future artists and just people who enjoy a good painting game and making history.
